You can be held accountable for failing to check out the vendors you employ

In April, 2014, two large pre-employment screening services were fined by the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection for failing to use reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy of information, one of which included obtaining incorrect data from sex offender registry records. This false information was presented to prospective employers and adversely affected certain applicants’ ability to obtain employment.

What can you do to protect your business from the potential liability of using such vendors? Conduct a background check on the business. Have they ever been sued, and, if so, for what violations? Check with the Better Business Bureau, check with the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, ask the vendor for references, then check them out and most of all scrutinize their findings!

Remember, you can be held accountable for failing to check out the vendors you employ if false information adversely impacts your hiring decisions!
